Google has a different policy for ranking websites within their database, they focus more on content and links. The more recipricated links you have especially from sites with a high page rank the higher you will place. That being said you can aid things along by doing the basics of SEO, ie. make sure you have your keywords, alpha tags, headers, descriptions on each page, make sure the site is w3c compliant, and submit yourself to the smaller search engines as well (Word of warning set up a junk email address for just this purpose, because these smaller engines traditionally send you a load of spam). Once you have done all these you can expect it to take anywhere between 2 days and 3 months for Google to find your site. For a speedier response you may like to consider payng for sponsored listings with Google or Yahoo etc. I personally dont like this.
You could always put some google ads on your page which google always looks favourably upon, but again I dont like them I think it cheapens the site and may put off some of your customers.
It is far better for you to concentrate on the quality of the information, and the ease of navigation of your site from the point of view of your customers. As long as its a useful site your customers will find you.

Let me start from the scratch, when you make a website start making i.e. its design should be search engine friendly; development will be accordingly. Then come SEO, competitor analysis, keyword research is the most crucial in search engine optimization. Keyword should target your targeted market and product and services so that down the line you should be able to maximize your investment and bring down cost.
Now, let come to the point i.e. Title is the first entry point for search engine crawler, then your content is most important. Content should be quality, theme related that have required density of keywords in the content. Then is navigation, all links should be accessible from any point no broken link will be tolerated from search engine perspective. Google engine automatically without your submission crawls the WWW and if a new domain is found with appropriate title and quality content, indexing picks up pace if regular updation goes on the website. As, answered by one, create your xml site map for google usine http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/, then save on your PC as xml and urllist.txt and submit to google webmaster central.
